Chemoport insertion is a surgical procedure to place an implantable device under the skin, usually on the chest, to provide long-term, reliable access to a major blood vessel for administering chemotherapy, drawing blood, and other medical treatments. The procedure minimizes the discomfort and potential vein damage from frequent needle sticks, offers safety by preventing medication leakage (extravasation), and allows for more convenient and hassle-free treatment. The procedure is performed under local or general anesthesia, and the device, also known as a port-a-cath, can be used for up to two years with proper care.
